a movie-making activity
Company Directors
Concept
Delegates are split up into teams, armed with production-quality video cameras, a movie genre, a broad story line and some tailored fun challenges, and given the task of writing, directing, performing and producing a short film using whatever sets, scripts and props they can come up with. The results can be presented to the entire group in a Company Short Film Festival afterwards!
Company Director Activities
Hewlett Packard staff create a new Superhero, Captain Invento (a play on their slogan 'Invent') and he saves the day against a villainous representative of a rival company…in full public view on Terrigal Beach, NSW!
How it works
Outset

The entire group is briefed on the event and its aims for 15-minutes. Each team receives a team-specific briefing handout (based on research we have done about the group themselves) which outlines their overall goals, genres and special challenges.

Goals

The goals could be tailor-made to the group or a general set involving skills from the list of objectives below. They would all revolve around the production of a 2-5 minute short film about a product or service or company issue.

Genres

These are styles around which their movies should be based. These may include fairy tale, martial arts, action-adventure, horror, Harry Potter etc. Genres help to give the team direction, whilst simultaneously giving them a creative opportunity.

An enthusiastic team acting in their CASTAWAY themed film
Special Challenges
These are scenes, events and occurrences that need to be included in a video which may be inspired by your company, conference theme, the industry, the product, the occasion and the detailed research we do on the people who will be there! For example, each team may be required to film a member of the public wearing one of your company t-shirts or caps (the team has to figure out how to negotiate this with the stranger). Anything is possible … as long as it's legal. The special challenges lead to some absolutely memorable pieces of footage! We have had the following occur:Pharmaceutical sales reps dressed as sheep in the main square in Christchurch, NZLawyers making martial arts movies in the middle of the CBDFinancial advisors convince members of the public who looked like one of their co-workers to play him in their movie!
Sequence of activity
After the briefing, the teams splinter off and decide which roles will be played by different people, both in-front-of and behind the camera. This is done as the result of a revealing, informal skills assessment within the group. We also provide a big box of props. The team prepares a script and designs a movie in sequence (so no editing is needed). We've designed the activity so that there is minimum emphasis on technological capability (so there's no editing in sound effects, music or special effects). We want people to concentrate more on the human aspects of the activity like communication, co-operation and creativity. Mistakes can be rewound and taped over! The completed films could be screened at a "Company Short Film Festival" or "Oscars Night " that afternoon or evening. Perhaps some awards (the client's answer to the Logies or Oscars) could take place with prizes for best or worst actor, actress and movie, best product placement, funniest moment and so forth. In total the activity would ideally run for anywhere up to 3-4 hours.
